Organization: Clean Annapolis River Project (CARP)
Location: Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia
Duration: approx. 6 month contract
Remuneration: $16.00 per hour at 35 hours/week
CARP is a charitable non-profit environmental organization based in Annapolis Royal NS. Our mission is to restore, protect and enhance the Annapolis River watershed through science, leadership and education.
Qualifications:
This internship is funded through Environment Canada’s Science Horizons Youth Initiative Program. All candidates must be graduates of a post-secondary program (e.g. College or University) in a related field (e.g. Environmental technology, Natural Resources, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Ecology) be aged 30 or under at the start of employment, be un-employed or under-employed (not working in your field of studies) and not have held a position through the Government of Canada’s Youth Initiative Programs before and not currently receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits. Specific Duties:
Reporting to the Manager of Program Delivery the Riparian Monitoring Technician will be required to lead the ecological monitoring work of the Clean Annapolis River Project from approximately early July to January 2012.
Duties can include but are not limited to:
– Sample water quality parameters on 8 field stations of the Annapolis River biweekly.
– Help train and lead a team of volunteers and summer students for water quality monitoring (Annapolis River Guardian Program).
– Analyze (including statistical analysis) using statistical analysis, the Annapolis River water quality data and produce a report card and detailed report using an existing template.
– Lead on the sampling and analysis of CABIN protocols (benthic invertebrates).
– Lead the sampling and statistical analysis research on the relationship between turbidity and total suspended solids as indicators to water quality health.
– Lead surveying long-term terrestrial biodiversity monitoring plots in the Annapolis Valley.
– Participate in monthly staff meetings.
– Participate in the delivery of a live update to our Board of Directors quarterly.
– Conduct fieldwork in a team environment, working with students and summer field staff.
– Participate in a performance evaluation at 3 months of employment.
– Write a project update report monthly for our Board of Directors.
– Conduct other monitoring fieldwork, analysis and duties as directed from time to time.
