Position: Farm Internship 2016
Type: full-time internship with accom, stipend, more (see below)
Organization: Chick-a-biddy Acres
Location: near Peterborough / Rice Lake / Hastings, Ontario

Chick-a-biddy Acres is a 100 member CSA set on 72 acres of scenic Trent Hills
pastureland, 30 minutes east of Peterborough. We are entering our 17th season
and looking forward to sharing what we have learned over those years with the
2016 interns.

Enthusiasm, stamina, commitment and a keen interest in learning will make for a
very rewarding internship. We are offering 3 hard working people the
opportunity for a 6 month intensive, full immersion, hands on experience
learning all aspects of the farm operation.
• Greenhouse operations – from early spring/summer seed propagation to the
season extension in the fall
• Soil building techniques/cover cropping/composting
• Field work – tractors/rototillers/raised bed preparations/transplanting/seeding/weed
& pest management
• CSA share organization from harvest through delivery
• Customer relations at CSA drop offs and farmers’ market
• Livestock care and management – raising pigs, and minding pastured poultry,
laying hens, turkeys
• Building projects – this year we hope to design and build a more efficient
vegetable washing and packing area and shop/storage/freezer facility.

The 6 acres of mixed vegetable production and the 4 greenhouses — along with
the livestock and eggs — offer a broad scope of education. With the help of
enthusiastic and dedicated interns Chick-a-biddy Acres has been providing
members with quality meat, vegetables and eggs since 2000.

You will be part of a team working along side Sherry Patterson, lead farmer and
Josh Blank, farm manager, 5.5 days per week from May – October. Private rooms,
kitchen facilities, library access and $350 monthly stipend.

Chick-a-biddy acres is also a part of the Collaborative Regional Alliance for
Farmer Training (CRAFT) in the Kawartha node: http://www.craftfarms.ca

Through CRAFT, interns will visit other farms monthly in the node for workshops
and tours, as well as meet interns on other farms in the Kawarthas and Durham
region.
