Causes of malaria

Malaria is caused by a protozoan plasmodium which
is carried by female anopheles mosquito. The anopheles is of different species
and four of the various species affect man and they are anopheles, yamble,
anopheles funestus, anopheles darling and anopheles punctulatus (Maxwell &
Toohey, 2007).
There are also four varieties of plasmodium vivax,
plasmodium falciparum, plasmodium malanal and plasmodium ovale.
These various species can be distinguished by their
morphology and associated changes in the cell of the parasite and Walls (2006)
is of the opinion that plasmodium is the chief cause of malaria in the tropics.
