Causes of chronic liver disease

According to Scott (2014), there are five main causes of chronic liver
diseases. They are:

I.
Viral causes: This category of chronic liver
disease is caused by certain virus such as HCV and HBV, thereby resulting to
hepatitis B and Hepatitis C chronic liver disease.
II.
Metabolic causes: This is the chemical
activities of the body. It can cause chronic liver disease when there is excess
chemical in the body, which can result to; Haemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease
and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (this happens from metabolic syndrome and
is caused by conditions such as obesity, high cholesterol and triglycerides,
high blood pressure).

III.
Toxic and Drugs.
Ø
Alcoholic Liver Disease : Alcohol consumption has been associated with alcoholic
hepatitis, fatty infiltration of the liver, accelerated progression of liver
disease, a higher frequency of cirrhosis , a higher incidence of hepatocellular
carcinoma, and death.
Ø
Drug induced liver disease: Most ingested substances are metabolized and chemically altered
as they pass through the liver. The liver is the central site for the
clearance, detoxification, excretion and activation of most medications. The
liver is vulnerable to injury from some medication, vitamins and herbal
remedies.
IV.
Right heart failure: Repeated episodes of heart
failure with blood build up in the liver.
V.
Autoimmune Response: This is as a result of
blocked or damaged tubes (bile ducts) that carry bile from the liver to the
intestine. This results to;
·
Primary biliary cirrhosis
·
Primary biliary hepatitis
·
Primary sclerosing cholangitis.
