The Carville Community Garden (CCG) is a unique community garden model that operates as a cooperative small farm where all members work together on 1.5 acres to grow food using organic and biodynamic principles. The CCG is looking for a motivated and well-qualified summer student interested in learning these techniques and principles. During the time of employment the mentoring will occur in the garden and the student will get continuous hands-on training regarding biodynamic/organic farming practises

Responsibilities:
The position acts as assistant to the Lead Gardener and their tasks and responsibilities include:
• Learning organic and biodynamic gardening techniques from Lead Gardeners
• Assisting in the assessment of garden and crop and work priorities or other activities as directed from our Lead Gardeners
• Reporting status of garden tasks verbally, email and updating our task priority list to Lead Gardener and organizers
• Sharing information with members around work priorities
• Supporting and working with a team of gardeners from diverse backgrounds and varying degrees of gardening experience in garden maintenance tasks (weeding, watering, harvesting, etc.).
• Garden maintenance and bridging task-times with other garden members, with the ability to work independently.
• Assisting in general orientation to newer garden members.
• Communicate status of garden tasks both.
• Helping to set up community and educational events and doing promotion

Qualifications:
• Strong interest in learning sustainable agriculture and learning biodynamics
• Strong communication skills
• Proven team player
• Ability to conduct manual gardening tasks which require a level of physical exertion.
• Be able to work flexible work schedules
• Out-going personality

This is a position funded by Canada Summer Jobs and requires that the candidate be:
(a) between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
(b) registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year;
(c) a student in a post-secondary program;
(d) a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
(e) legally entitled to work
