VLIR-UOS annually
awards ten ICP PhD scholarships for a maximum of four years (48 months).
These PhD scholarships are available to excellent graduates from Africa,
Asia and Latin America who have studied in a VLIR-UOS funded international
master course (ICP) in Flanders and wish to make a PhD at a Flemish university.
The research should be carried out on a development oriented subject; in a so-called
sandwich programme. Scholar should conduct part of the research at the
institute in his home country and part at the Flemish
university. Applications should be submitted between 24 February and 7
March 2014 (depending on the university).

Eligibility:
Before
we submit the applications to the Research Scholarships Selection Committee,
the Institutional Coordinator for Development Cooperation (ICOS; see below) and
VLIR-UOS check the eligibility of the application on the basis of the below
enumerated criteria.
-Applications found not to fulfill the eligibility criteria are submitted to
the Bureau UOS for a final decision on their eligibility.
-They do not submit applications ruled not eligible by the Bureau UOS to the
Research Scholarships Selection Committee. The Selection Committee can
also declare an application to be not eligible if there are grounds for
doing so. The Bureau UOS rules on such eligibility declaration.

Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Asia: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India,
Indonesia, Jordan, Laos, Nepal, Palestinian Territories, Philippines, Sri
Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam. Latin America: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba,
Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico,
Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam and Uruguay can apply for the scholarships.
(The candidate should already have obtained the ICP Master’s degree when
submitting the application, or should obtain it in the reference year,
i.e. 2014.)
Scholarship
Description: The
ICP PhD programme aims to institutionally strengthen universities or research
institutions in the South through capacity building, by upgrading academic
personnel at these research institutes or universities on the basis of the
granting of individual PhD scholarships. With the ICP PhD programme VLIR-UOS
grants every year ten PhD scholarships to excellent Master graduates from
Africa, Asia and Latin America who have studied in a VLIR-UOS funded
international master course (ICP) in Flanders and wish to make a PhD at a
Flemish university.

Duration of
award(s): A full ICP PhD scholarship
consists of four years (48 months) maximally, and cannot be extended. The
scholar is required to spend no less than 16 months (out of 48) and maximally
24 months at the Flemish university.
What does it
cover? To the scholar:
-Monthly allowance
-Travel costs allowance per stay in Belgium
-One-time installation allowance and mailing allowance
-To the host unit (Flemish resp. local university)
-Monthly insurance, supervision allowance and research allowance
-Per academic year: tuition fee, airline ticket for the student, airline ticket
and travel fee for the local or Flemish supervisor.
All allowances and payments are to be accounted for on the budget of the
Scholarships Programme (BTP) of the Flemish host university, which will inform
the scholar of his obligations in this respect.
Selection
Criteria:
Academic curriculum (past grades are considered less important than a balanced
research proposal)
-Research capacity or potential (past publications are considered less
important than a balanced research proposal);
-Knowledge of and experience with the subject of the research proposal;
-Language skills relevant to or necessary for the research
-Additional relevant abilities and skills
Notification: Selections of ICP PhD 2014
scholarships will take place in June 2014. Applicant will be notified
in late June 2014.
How to
Apply: The application must be
complete and sent with all necessary documents to the ICOS of the Flemish
university where one wants to conduct the PhD, before the deadline established
by that university. The applicant is not allowed to send his application
to VLIR-UOS.

Application Deadline: The deadline of submission to
the ICOS of the Flemish university is between 24 February and 7 March 2014
(Association KU Leuven, Antwerp University Association and University
Association Brussels: 3 March 2014, Association Ghent University: 24 February
2014 and Limburg University Association: 7 March 2014).
