We
started as a Peace Corps Volunteer teacher, a Liberian teacher, a professional
tailor and a group of girls that want a better education and a better chance to
graduate. Without any funds, we generated our first dollars by sewing scraps of
lappa (African textiles) together to make handbags for the large expat
community in Monrovia in order to provide scholarships for female students.

In
one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world, we have grown to 30 paid
employees, 30 female scholars, our own renovated production room, housing on
site, NGO vehicle, store in the capital city, local NGO status in Liberia and
non-profit 501(c)3 status in the States. During our rapid expansion, we
received grants from the U.S. Ambassador, Chevron, Friends of Liberia, National
Peace Corps Association and ExxonMobil. Last year our President for Bosh Bosh,
Yamah Zawu, was invited to Washington, D.C. to participate at a one month
workshop hosted by Plan International and funded through ExxonMobil to attend
the Global Women in Management Program, which strengthened women’s management,
leadership and technical skills to advance women economic opportunities.
Charlene Espinoza, our Founder and CEO was invited by the Office of the First Lady
of the United States to be a panelist at the Brookings Institute to offer the
perspective of a community activist for girls’ education in developing
countries. She was then personally invited to the White House to introduce the
President and First Lady of the United States at the launch of the global Let
Girls Learn initiative, where she was recognized as a leader and role model for
community-led female empowerment initiatives at the launch this March 2015.

and provide them with the necessary tools for them to succeed – through
reading, writing, math, small business skill development, social
entrepreneurship, income-generating opportunities, and extracurricular
activities.

We

We
currently employ 30 rural Liberians in their production, education and
management teams, all of whom receive salaries, benefits and scholarships for
their children. They also receive regular training and capacity building,
including computer skills training and literacy evening classes. In addition,
there are 30 female students, who we proudly call “scholars” aged
from 11-28 in the Bosh Bosh scholarship program who receive funding and
additional evening classes in computer, sewing and literacy.

This
is an exceptional opportunity for people interested in future careers in
development abroad and grassroots organizations. It will give the individual a
chance to work directly with Liberian staff, learn the ins and outs of managing
NGO’s in a developing country, give back and gain skills at the same time.

Due
to our potential, these accomplishments are still just the beginning. We are
looking for someone to continue this growth and write the next chapter of this
incredible story.
