After two decades at the helm, Kenya’s Nicholas Musonye stands as Secretary-General of the 12-member East and Central African Football Associations Council (Cecafa).
Musonye has stated that he will be resigning from the role he has served for the past 20 years after the weekend of the Cecafa Cup in Kigali, Rwanda.
“I have gathered a lot of experience, exposure and contacts around the world over the past two decades,” Musonye told journalists. “From a shell of a structure, we have worked very hard and managed to organise several high profile competitions including the Senior Challenge Cup and Kagame Cup.
“Our team secured relationships and sponsorships from blue chip companies such as Tusker, MTN, SuperSport, GTV, Serengeti Breweries and of course Azam TV. We also receive one million dollars (about Sh100 million) each year to organise youth and women tournaments, and about half of that to run our secretariat.”
Some reports revealed that he is now attempting to challenge Nick Mwendwa for the Kenya Football Federation (FKF) presidency.
In a recent BBC interview, Musonye blasted football administrators in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania for “sabotaging” the regional football body.
“I’m in charge of 12 countries, all of them being equal but Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda think they’re more equal than others,” said Musonye. “If they want to kill Cecafa, let them do it, it’s their baby, it’s their organisation.”
