The Organization:
Founded in 2005 to provide University of Toronto students with a free
educational bicycle repair facility, Bikechain has gr
own to become the centre
of the bicycling community at U of T. Bikechain operates a free bicycle lending
program for students, a free Do It Yourself (DIY) educational repair shop, and
bicycle-related seminars and events. Bikechain is a non-profit corporation
whose mandate is to promote the use of bicycles as a form of sustainable transportation,
and to provide cycling and bike repair education.
The Shop Manager Position:
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing all day-to-day operations of
Bikechain’s repair shop and bicycle lending program. The Shop Manager reports
to the Executive Director.
Key responsibilities:
Shop Operations
• Overseeing and facilitating shop operations
• Instructing participants and volunteers in bicycle mechanics
• Ordering and maintaining sales inventory
• Working with the executive director to improve sales and maintain
relationships with suppliers
• Working within budgets and managing supplies and equipment
• Overseeing shop building projects
• Ensuring maintenance of mechanical standards
• Ensuring a safe and functional work environment
Human Resources Management
• Assisting the executive director in hiring, scheduling, training, and
overseeing volunteers and staff
• Maintaining a culture of volunteer appreciation
• Ensuring that an open and non-discriminatory environment is maintained within
the workspace and at all Bikechain events
Programming and Other Services
• Overseeing and facilitating the delivery of the bike lending program and
maintenance of the fleet
• Overseeing and facilitating the repair of used bikes for sale
• Overseeing and facilitating Bikechain’s lock cutting, tool lending, and lock
lending services
• Maintaining the Facilities and Services fleet
• Maintaining outreach tool kits
• Planning and managing other programming as directed by the executive director
Minimum Qualifications:
• Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task are essential
• Strong bicycle mechanical skills, experience working as a mechanic
• Experience teaching and facilitating; excellent communication skills
• Experience managing or supervising volunteers and staff
• Comfortable using all tools found in a bike shop, including power tools and
tapping/threading tools
• Experience placing orders and managing inventory in a bike shop
• Experience working within budgets
• Customer service experience
Assets, but not required:
• Post-secondary education in community development, environmental studies, or
other relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
• Experience with hiring staff, and knowledge of human resources legislation
and best practices
• Experience working with campus groups, nonprofit, or environmental
organizations
• Experience coordinating events
• Knowledge of Quickbooks accounting software
Terms of contract:
• Compensation is $15/hour
• Contract is for one year with possibility of renewal
• Workweek is 30 hours/week January through April, and 37.5 hours/week May
through December
• Includes some evening and occasional weekend hours
