Senior Environmental Protection Officer

Care for the environment in an innovative and professional ministry

Prince George, B.C.

The Environmental Protection (EP) Regional Operations Branch of the Ministry of Environment is responsible for delivering environmental programs and services throughout the province, including: waste discharge authorizations and compliance; integrated pest management; environmental impact assessment; ambient and discharge monitoring; auditing and reporting; and air, water and land standard and objective setting. The EP program goal is to maintain a sustainable environment in terms of the quality of air, water and land in balance with sustainable economic development.

As an Environmental Protection Officer, you will play a key role in supporting the division’s objectives by providing authoritative and technical advice on the Environmental Management Act and the management of municipal, industrial, agricultural, point and non-point source wastes and hazardous materials. Using your sound, technical judgement, you can expect to manage complex projects with critical economic, political, environmental and social factors. You will lead important environmental plans and projects to build consensus among stakeholders, conducting conflict resolution and mediation to encourage cooperative solutions to emerging issues. A skilled communicator, you will convey technical information clearly and convincingly during public processes

In addition to a science degree (Master’s preferred) in environmental management, applied science or natural sciences, you have considerable experience in environmental protection and waste management, treatment or disposal technologies. A Master’s in environmental engineering and three years’ experience would be highly preferable. You also have either registration (or eligibility for registration) as a P.Eng or geoscientist with APEGBC or as a professional agrologist with the BC Association of Agrologists.

Your experience with area management planning, conducting industrial or sector audits and development risk assessments—ideally gained in the industrial sector—is supported by your advanced ability to apply engineering waste treatment knowledge in the field to implement solutions to resource or environmental issues.

Your ability to plan and direct both your own and others’ engineering and scientific work to set priorities, develop, coordinate and implement environmental protection and management projects is made possible through your tact and sound judgement, as well as problem-solving and negotiation skills, whether you are working with government personnel, industry, stakeholders, communities, agencies or interest groups. A proven ability to communicate technical information clearly and convincingly, in writing and orally, during public processes rounds out the picture.
