Background Study on Child Growth and Development

Growth
and development are the process of changes which take place in an individual
from conception to old age. It is a normal process of life. A child who does
not grow is not normal. Growth means the physical increase in the body size and
appearance caused by increasing number of new cells. The term growth and development
are used interchangeably, each depends upon the other.

Development
consists of a progressive series of changes of an orderly coherent. Type
towards the goal of maturity, it consist of a transitive from lower to higher
level stage of activities on function. Development results in new
characteristics and abilities on the part of the individual child. It is something
that can be observed, appraised and measures (Olayemi 2006).
When
examining child growth and development, it is necessary to look at the aspect
of family setting in which most children grows, and developed family is an
institution that exists in all societies. In some societies a person life is bound
up. Almost totally with that of the family, this is the basic of all social
relationship and is essential to an individual survival in the society. Family is
a unit of all human society which provides for the rearing of children and
other basic needs, it is a small group in constant may or may not result in
disharmony or unbalance. An individual life revolves around then family at one
stage or another during his/her life time. The structural pattern of a family
differs from society to society.
For
instance, in Nigeria, it is based on blood ties and marriage family performs
some function to meet the primary requirements of child growth and development,
this includes physical, social and mental roles.
In
considering child growth and development we interested in the child growing in
a stable relationship adequate material sufficient and conducive environment.
In Conclusion,
for a child to grow and develop well family members must show love to the child
in terms of emotional needs and feel secure.
