Three retired opera
singers living in a retirement home for the arts begrudgingly welcome a new
arrival and then plan to sing a quartet from Rigoletto for Verdi’s birthday.
Striving for vitality whilst accepting mortality.
Cast:
Cecily Robson: A
buxom lady. Starting to forget things. “Her face is still that of a child.
Unlined and innocent. And her smile lights up the darkest room.”
Reginald Paget: A serious man. Always dresses immaculately. “kind and gentle
and unassertive.”
Wilfred Bond: A joker. Always thinking about sex. “vulgar and crude, the
intellect of a tse tse fly, but a giver of life and that’s a lovely thing.”
Jean Horton: A frail woman. A Grande Dame. “ never thinks, never draws breath,
just bulldoze[s] over other people’s feelings.”
Please prepare a short [less than two minutes] monologue. You may also be asked
to read from the play. Excerpts will be available for actors to read at the
audition. You should read the play before auditioning. Please bring a resume
and headshot – a photocopy will do. The script is on reserve at the Performing
Arts Desk, 5th floor, Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street.
