Assessment of the prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Central Hospital Warri

Abstract
This
study was undertaken to assess the occurrence of anaemia in pregnant women
attending antenatal care in Central Hospital Warri, Delta State. The purpose of
this study include to determine the prevalence of anaemia in pregnant women,
factors that causes the occurrence of anaemia in pregnant women. This is a
cross sectional study of 406 women attending ANC in Central Hospital, Warri for
their booking visit. Simple random sampling technique was used to select a
sample size of 406 respondents. Data were collected by means of structured
questionnaire distributed while data obtained were compiled and analysed. The
finding obtained revealed that anaemia in pregnant women in Warri Central is
common and the factors that causes this illness occurrence include iron
deficiency, folate deficiency, malaria, sickle cell diseases and human immuno
deficiency virus (HIV). Also educational status and the birth interval are
factors that were found to have affected the assessment of the prevalence of
anaemia in this study. Therefore, educating women on early ANC booking and
compliance with the use of prescribed medications (Iron supplements, folate and
antimalaria) should be emphasized to reduce the problem of anaemia in
pregnancy.
