Abstract
This research work examined the implication of
environmental degradation on Afiesere Community in Ughelli Local Government
Area of Delta State. Four study objectives were drawn for this study which
includes: to find out whether environmental degradation exists in Afiesere, to
assess the level of awareness of the people of Afiesere on the cause of
environmental degradation, to determine the effects of environmental
degradation on the ecosystem and to determine the effect of environmental
degradation on the workers and community members. The researcher used the
descriptive survey method to carry out the study while the simple and
stratified random sampling techniques were used to obtain a sample size of 250
respondents out of a total population of 2500. Data were collected using
structured questionnaire while the frequency distribution table, percentage and
chi-square (X2) statistical method was used to analyse the data
collected. The results obtained revealed that environmental degradation exist
in Afiesere and has effects on the ecosystem and the people in the community.
Based on this, the researchers recommends that effective health education
should be given to the general public on the implication of environmental
degradation, also the community leaders and government to work together to
ensure that environmental degradation is minimized or outrightly eliminated.
