Position
Description
The
DC Elementary School Program Teacher is responsible for providing homework
support and planning and facilitating daily enrichment lessonsfocused on
helping youth grow in AALEAD’s three outcome areas: EducationalEmpowerment,
Identity, and Leadership. The program primarily serves low-income Asian
Pacific American youth in elementary school between the ages of 5-13 and runs
Monday through Friday from 3:00pm – 6:00pm at Thomson Elementary School and
Bancroft Elementary School.
The DC Elementary School Program Teacher reports
to the DC Elementary School Site Coordinator and DC Elementary School Program
Coordinator.
Duties
and Responsibilities
  • Manage
    classroom behavior
  • Plan,
    implement, and document daily enrichment lessons and facilitate
    projectbased learning focused on helping youth attain educational
    empowerment,strengthen their identities, and build leadership skills
  • Document
    lesson plans and projects
  • Provide
    daily assistance with vocabulary and grammar; correct youth pronunciation,
    spelling, and syntax
  • Develop
    relationships with parents and families
  • Track
    attendance and assist with other program data collection as needed
  • Meet
    monthly with the Afterschool Program team to discuss individual youth’s
    progress and recommendations for improvement
  • Chaperone
    field trips (may occur during weekends)
Qualifications
  • High
    School Diploma required (BA/BS preferred)
  • Mandarin,
    Vietnamese, Cantonese, or Spanish Preferred
  • Relevant
    experience working with youth
  • Good
    organizational skills; strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability
    to communicate and interact with volunteers, youth, and parents
  • Sensitivity
    to the needs of and ability to work with refugee and immigrant children,
    youth, and families
  • Attentive
    to details; ability to work independently and collaboratively
