GENERAL
OUTLINE OF POSITION
OUTLINE OF POSITION
- Provide
advocacy services directly to residential tenants, as selected and under
supervision of the Principal Solicitor. Advocacy services may include
understanding, interpreting and advising on legislation, Department of
Housing policy manuals, tenancy agreements, condition reports, breach
notices, etc. - Interviewing
clients to clarify issues - Advising
clients on their rights and responsibilities under the Residential
Tenancies Act and Residential Parks (Long Stay Tenants) Act - Assisting
clients with the preparation of RTA forms / court applications and the
like - Providing
clients with support to self-advocate, where appropriate - Negotiating
with landlords (public and private), real estate agencies and other
relevant bodies - Developing
appeal submissions and representing clients in appeals forums - Advocating
on behalf of clients in the Magistrate’s Court - Travel
to outreach locations - Provide
telephone based advocacy service - Provide
promotional activities

SELECTION
CRITERIA
CRITERIA
ESSENTIAL
- Demonstrated
ability to build strong, ongoing, positive work relationships - Demonstrated
understanding of, and the ability to interpret policies and legislation
(note: on completion of pre-requisite training the legislation and
policies will be relevant to residential tenants, including the Residential
Tenancies Act and Department of Housing policy manuals) - Demonstrated
ability of well-developed written and verbal communication skills
(including computer skills) - Good
interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate sensitively and
effectively with a broad range of individuals from diverse social-economic
backgrounds - Good
organisational skills - Good
negotiation skills - Preparedness
to undertake an advocacy role in the Department of Housing Appeals
mechanism, where appropriate (demonstrate an example if previously
undertaken similar role / situation) - C
class driver’s licence and preparedness to use own vehicle - Preparedness
to travel occasionally to regional outreach locations and stay overnight
where necessary and travel to Perth for conferences and training
DESIRABLE
