Organization Description
The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village
(ASYV) is a residential community in rural Rwanda. It is a home to youth who
were orphaned during and after the genocide in 1994. The Village, which opened its doors to its first class of students in
December 2008, is a place of hope, where traumatized youth can “dry their
tears” (Agahozo) and “live in peace” (Shalom). The Village is designed to care
for, protect and nurture these

young people. The youth of Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village come
from all 30 districts in Rwanda. We aim to select four representatives from each of these districts
every year. We invest in Rwanda’s most vulnerable orphans with the confidence
that they are capable of great accomplishments. We focus on developing
students both cognitively and socially. We follow the Rwandan curriculum, but
teach in a mediated learner-centered way that deepens a student’s level of
understanding.
Position Summary
The
Academic Director will serve as the head of the school management team
responsible for planning, designing, organizing, controlling and implementing
the policies and procedures of the school in line with the Rwandan National
Curricula set up. The Academic Director will play a critical role in shaping
the educational experience of the students by overseeing and implementing
teachers’ and students’ work towards achieving the stated mission and
philosophy of the school.

Roles, duties and responsibilities
1. General School
Management
Management
- Supervise all school personnel and serve as the chief administrator
of the school in developing and implementing school policies and programs. - Serve as a liaison between the school, local and central Government
institutions in charge of Education. - Conceptualize the broad goals of the school and plan accordingly to
ensure that procedures are implemented to achieve the stated goals. - Effectively and efficiently manage and integrate the resources at
the school’s disposal in the achievement of ASYV’s vision and mission. - Prepare formal
education budget estimates in liaison with ASYV administration.

- Provide strategic leadership and administrative management of the
implementation of the ASYV’s academic strategy and policy by leading, managing
and inspiring the staff. - Collaborate on and implement academic plans and policies by
overseeing all academic calendars, class schedules and subject outlines. - Foster a culture of academic excellence and a collaborative
environment among the teaching staff and students and oversee a
collaborative effort between the school’s homeroom teachers, H&W and
FMs to ensure effective information sharing for individual evaluation and
M&E purposes. - Supervise all instructional programs of the school, evaluating
lesson plans and observing classes on a regular basis to encourage the use
of a variety of instructional strategies and materials consistent with
research on Learner-centered methodology. - Innovate and build tools to facilitate teachers and students
altogether in their transfer of knowledge.
3. Staff and Student
Management
Management
- Take the lead in the recruitment, regular performance management of
teaching staff and advise on restructuring. Work with HR and M&E to
agree on creating a system that works for the organization. - Oversee all the department heads and streamline all the support that
students receive on campus from beginning to end. - Supervise, in a fair and consistent manner, effective discipline and
behavior challenges, from both the teaching staff and students, with high
standards, consistent with the philosophy, values and mission of ASYV. - Keep the Village Director abreast of any performance management issues
with the teaching staff and recommending viable solutions. - Facilitate regular teaching staff meetings, manage all information
to the students and approve all outgoing school recommendations from these
meetings. - Serve as a role model for students, demonstrating the importance and
relevance of learning, accepting responsibility and demonstrating pride in
the ASYV vision.
4. Capacity Building
and Professional Development

- Work in partnership with the Village Director to create a culture of
openness to learning amongst teaching staff and formally and informally
observe lessons and provide constructive feedback to teachers. - Facilitate the intellectual and professional development of teachers
with a focus on personal improvement and improving student achievement. - Help identify areas for growth for each teaching staff and design
learning plans to help teachers improve their practice. - Take the lead in supporting teachers with the-strategic how of
learner centered teaching-by sharing multiple instructional strategies
with teachers during lesson planning. Coordinate peer learning among the
teaching staff through regular capacity building workshops and
opportunities for knowledge exchange.
* As a senior member
of the management team at ASYV, the Academic Director may be delegated other
administrative tasks from time to time by the Village Director.

Qualifications, Skills and Competencies required
1.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Education
from a recognized University. Masters Degree in Education or Management preferred.
A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in teaching in Secondary Schools
with at least (2) years as a School administrator.
