It offers support, advice and expertise to media organisations in the Asia-Pacific region, funded by a range of donors, and has designed and delivered communication and media initiatives to support development objectives in Cambodia, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands and Fiji.
ABC International Development experts employ information and education solutions across a range of platforms, including radio, television, online, print and other media to enhance communications and media organisations’ ability and capacity to operate in the public interest. ABC International Development provides a broad range of services and expertise in areas including management and governance, content production, technical management, human resources, support and administration, specialist skills, and sales and marketing.
Background of the Program:
The Solomon Islands Media Assistance Scheme (SOLMAS) has been operating in Honiara for three years to improve the reach and quality of Solomon Islands media, increase the demand for better governance, and assist with progress towards the Millennium Development Goals particularly health, education and disaster risk reduction. SOLMAS works with 13 Media Associations of Solomon Islands media members, including commercial and community organisations and the national broadcaster, the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation.
Position Description:
The position will be based in Honiara and be responsible for introducing C4D concepts, training and content initiatives to local media. The role will be focused on assisting all Solomon Islands media organisations to develop and sustain high-quality, new multi-platform services, targeting key development challenges.
The Advisor will:
• Assist with the development of media content and broadcast programming strategies on health, but may also work on some education, disaster risk reduction, gender and governance themes;
• Improve the capacity of Solomon Islands media organisations to engage in participatory communications with audiences across multi-platforms (including social media, text, cell phones, etc);
• Assist media organisations to form partnerships with NGOs and government agencies who are developing relevant content;
• Contribute to a Monitoring and Evaluation strategy to measure insights and impacts;
• Support the Solomon Islands media to represent a greater diversity of viewpoints in society by engaging with a wide range of citizens and stakeholders;
• Provide relevant training, coaching and mentoring on Communication for Development and delivery across multi-platforms;
• Assist counterparts to design key messages to promote behaviour change across intervention areas that are identified as key social issues needing shifts in attitudes and behaviour.
• Submit concise, well-written regular reports on project activities, challenges and needs as required;
• Work closely with the Program Manager of SOLMAS on all aspects of the design and delivery of agreed activities;
• Work closely with other SOLMAS staff.
Selection Criteria:
1. A university degree in journalism, communications, public relations, other relevant fields, or significant professional experience in lieu of a degree;
2. At least five years of professional experience in media development, media strengthening, communication for development, or behaviour change communications;
3. Experience managing development projects that strengthen and promote health, education, and gender issues.
4. Between five and ten years of media production experience, working as a professional journalist or program maker; or producer of media for public consumption, particularly in resource-challenged settings;
5. At least five years experience working internationally, with developing country experience a plus;
6. Experience working in, or deep knowledge of, Solomon Islands or the Pacific region highly regarded.
7. Ability to meet high standards and deadlines, solid project reporting skills, sound budgetary management, good interpersonal skills.
8. Fluency in Solomon Islands Tok Pijin desirable.
