Abbotsleigh operates a highly successful After School Care program from 2.30 –
6.30pm on school days within a beautiful heritage
building on the
well-appointed Junior School campus in Wahroonga.
Abbotsleigh seeks a mature minded, yet enthusiastic and experienced educational
or childcare worker to actively support our outstanding After School Care
program for Transition (pre-Kindergarten) to Year 6 students.
The ASC Assistant works under direction from the Coordinator and with 2 other
staff in hosting up to 60 children from 2.30pm to 6.30pm each school day. The
ASC Centre provides healthy meals and snacks, craft, recreational games and
sport activities and a homework support program.
Ideally, the successful candidate will have an established educational or
child-related professional background and/or childcare qualifications, a proven
talent for creative programming and an understanding of the National Quality
Framework. Expected attributes include well developed interpersonal skills, a
natural affinity for children, good organisational skills and a commitment to
excellence.

Job Description: After School Care Assistant
Reports to: Head of Junior School via the After School Care Coordinator
The After School Care Assistant supports the effective operation of the After
School Care Centre, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment is created for
all girls from Transition / Kindergarten to Year 6 who utilise this facility
both on a permanent and casual basis. The Assistant contributes to the day to
day organisation of the Centre and provides the safe delivery of quality
programs. The ASC Assistant is expected to comply with the National Quality
Framework for After School Care Centres and reports to the Head of Junior
School.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
• Facilitate the implementation of policies and the School Improvement Plan to
deliver high quality care and education in compliance with the National Quality
Framework
• Communicate with parents to establish effective partnerships
• Relate and respond to young children in a supportive and nurturing manner
• Work collaboratively with teaching and administrative staff
• Provide relevant and timely detail to support the generation of semester
reports to parents
• Assist in the maintenance of accurate attendance records and associated
documentation to enable CCB funding and internal payment processes
• Maintain current first aid qualifications
• Multi-task and prioritise whilst maintaining a calm demeanour
• Demonstrate sound public relations skills with a keen desire to assist others
• Exercise diplomacy, discretion and confidentiality
• Use considered initiative and work with limited supervision
In working with the students:
• Assist the Coordinator in the design and implementation of quality after
school care programs involving a variety of activities that take place both
within the Centre and also outdoor activities that occur in the School grounds
• Work with the ASC staff to deliver healthy afternoon teas and light supper to
the girls
• Supervise homework, reading and music practice
• Support the Coordinator in monitoring the girls’ pastoral and academic care
needs for appropriate liaison with classroom teachers and parents to ensure
needs are met
• Administer first aid as needed and keep accurate and up to date records
In working with staff and parents:
• Work collaboratively with the ASC team to support the quality delivery of
programs that meet the range of ages and interests of the girls
• Support effective and positive communication with parents and community
members to facilitate a smooth transition between school, after school care and
home
• Consult with the ASC Coordinator in order to provide consistent and
appropriate feedback to parents as required
• Promptly and diplomatically refer parent concerns to the Coordinator for
resolution
• Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate loyalty to the Head of Junior School
and Headmistress
ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTION
• Support good record keeping of attendance records for the safety of students
and to facilitate accurate billing
• Monitor student numbers to ensure compliance with National Quality Framework
and to provide feedback to the ASC Coordinator
• Assist in the processing of receipts for food and resource purchases to
enable a timely payment of accounts
• Report all identified building and maintenance issues via the ASC Coordinator
to ensure the Centre remains a safe environment and compliant with WH&S
legislation and the National Quality Frameworks.
