North Queensland NRL
Cowboys House (the House) is an accommodation solution for Aboriginal &
Torres Strait Islander young men from remote communities of North Queensland
attending schools in Townsville.  

The House aims to
provide educational, employment and training opportunities in a culturally
appropriate, safe and engaging residential environment.  The aim of NRL
Cowboys House is for every student to

reach their full potential.

The Head of Boarding
is pivotal in driving the culture of the House and positive outcomes for
students.  The position will coordinate, lead and manage the planning and
delivery of appropriate and effective health, well being, leadership and
recreational programs for students. 

You will liaise and
coordinate activities of external bodies with which the House has established
critical links including with Townsville Secondary Schools and a range of other
agencies that provide support services to our students. 

The role will be
based at the House in Gulliver and has easy access to the city’s private and
public secondary schools and major sport and recreation clubs and facilities.
 

Key
responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:

  • actively
    supervise, interact and engage with students to ensure achievement of
    quality outcomes for them and the House.
  • Provide
    line management, support and leadership to residential staff
  • Facilitate
    a safe setting for students by developing and maintaining approved House
    systems and procedures compliant with relevant Acts and legislation. 
  • Facilitate
    a harmonious social and working environment by addressing staff and
    student conflict and complaints promptly and with due regard to duty of
    care and confidentiality. 
  • Coordinate,
    lead and plan the delivery of appropriate health, education and recreation
    programs
  • Be the
    key contact for student’s families and communities and provide regular
    feedback to parents on student well-being
  • Support
    the schooling of students by liaising with the Education Manager and
    school staff and ensuring students are prepared and punctual in their
    movements to and from school.
  • ensure
    the effective running of the House by monitoring and evaluating contracted
    service providers including cleaning, catering, grounds and laundry
    services. 

The
successful applicant will possess:

Passion for working
with young people and making a positive difference.

Relevant
post-secondary qualifications e.g. a professional qualification in Youth Work,
teaching or in an appropriate allied field.

Demonstrated
successful experience in the boarding or hostel industry.

Demonstrated
successful experience in working with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander
adolescents and families..

Demonstrated
experience in providing leadership/counselling to adolescents including
experience in student behaviour management.

Demonstrated
experience in managing staff and service providers

A sound
understanding of policies and legislation related to the care of young people
and running a boarding facility and demonstrated capacity to administer. 

Proven ability to
manage change, plan and implement operational systems and procedures including
staff rostering and industrial arrangements.
