About AERG and the Education into Employment Programme
AERG (the Student Survivors Association)is an association of student survivors of genocide against Tutsi, created on 20th October, 1996 at National University of Rwanda by twelve students; with the main mission of gathering and representing all higher leaning and secondary school student survivors of Genocide, A.E.R.G. was found to become a new family for all orphans of genocide.

After its creation, A.E.R.G was expanded in secondary schools around the national universities and later on became represented in entire country. Now it counts 26 sections of universities and higher leaning institutes and 335 secondary schools. Up to now AERG has got 43,397 members in the whole country headed by National coordination.

AERG’s Education into Employment (EiE) programme addresses the needs of its members in overcoming the challenging transition from education to employment in Rwanda, where on average young graduates wait up to two years before they can find paid work. This is particularly severe for survivors of the 1994 genocide who often lack the family networks and support that might help them to gain employment and seek guidance when choosing careers.

A combination of factors such as a small number of professional entry level jobs, a low correlation between the university courses offered and the needs of the job market and a high youth population in Rwanda are key factors in high unemployment. This is further exacerbated by the fact that many young people lack the extra-curricular skills, such as English, I.T skills and advanced interpersonal skills needed in finding jobs

The EiE programme provides mentoring services, I.T training, access to computer facilities and university based English clubs to provide young survivors of the 1994 genocide access to services they need to develop extra-curricular skills and improve their understanding of the world of work in order to increase their competitiveness in the job market.

The EiE programme is keen to expand into youth entrepreneurship, as youth, the predominant population group in Rwanda, need to create their own jobs and jobs for others through their own start up initiatives. Targeting youth with access to tertiary education means that Rwandan youth with high level technical skills can create innovative businesses in the formal sector as well as contribute to improving employment levels in their age group.

It wishes to do this through developing a programme which provides both the skills and the enabling environment to start up viable businesses, to generate income and gain key experience as an entrepreneur.
