University of Western Australia
offers Scholarships for International Research Fees (SIRFs) for international
students. These scholarships are offered to undertake the degree of
Masters by Research or Doctor of Philosophy in Australia. The
scholarship provide course tuition fees and standard health cover only for
each semester of the course in line with the scholarship tenure and conditions.
The basis of selection of award is academic achievement. Applications must be
sent by the online application process by 31st January 2013.

Eligibility:-
To be eligible to apply for a SIRF scholarship an applicant:
must be eligible to enrol or be enrolled as a full-time student in a
higher degree by research at the University upon commencement of their
scholarship;
must not have commenced a higher degree by research prior to year
for which the scholarship is sought unless the applicant was unable to
apply for a scholarship in the last selection round due to the timing of their
enrolment;
must not already be in receipt of another UWA Postgraduate Research
International Tuition Fee Scholarship (SIRF or IPRS) or a UWA International Living
Allowance Scholarship (UIS or UPAIS);
must have completed at least four years of tertiary education studies
at a high level of achievement demonstrated by the award of a degree of First
Class Honours standard or equivalent;
must be a citizen of an overseas country, excluding New Zealand;
must meet the University’s English language requirements for
scholarship holders;
must not have completed a degree either at the same level as, or at a
higher level than, the degree for which candidature is sought;
must enrol in an area of research concentration and be recommended by
the head of the school in which the proposed study is to be undertaken;
must not be an overseas student who is currently on an Australian
Government sponsored scholarship such as AusAID seeking to apply for a SIRF
immediately following the AusAID-funded study. Such candidates must meet the
terms and conditions of these awards prior to applying for future funding. This
applies to students under the Australian Sponsored Training Scholarships
(ASTAS), the Equity and Merit Scholarship Scheme (EMSS) and the Australian
Development Scholarships (ADS).
Scholarship Open for Students of Following
Countries
: The International students can apply for this
scholarship (not an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen, or an Australian
permanent resident).
Scholarship Description: The aim of the UWA SIRF scholarship is to attract top quality
international postgraduate students to areas in which the University has
specialized research strengths and to support Australia’s research effort.
Successful applicants can expect to become members of a research team working
under the direction of senior researchers and in an area which has attracted
external resources. Application for a scholarship is also an application for
admission to the University.
Duration of award(s): The scholarship is tenable for the duration of the course for which it
is awarded which is:
-two years for the degree of master’s by research;
-three years for a doctoral degree.
What does it cover? These scholarships cover International Tuition Fees for up to four (4)
years, as well as Overseas Health Cover for the award holder only. SIRF
awardees may also be awarded a full living allowance scholarship.
Selection Criteria: Applications for SIRF scholarships are rated according to the following
criteria: (a) Academic achievement; (b) English language achievement; (c)
Research training achievement; and (d) Proposed research environment.
Allocation of scholarships is the outcome of a competitive ranking and
selection process in which applications are scored and ranked by Schools,
Faculties and the University Scholarships Committee, according to these common
criteria on the basis of evidence provided.
