Reporting to: The
Principal Location: Kigali, Rwanda

The Director of
Student Affairs will oversee all aspects of campus life and extracurricular
activities for the diverse student body at Akilah. In addition, the DSA will
provide individual counseling services to students in order to help them
achieve personal and professional success while at Akilah. Training and
experience in counseling and therapy is required.

DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES

Counseling

  • Efficiently
    structure and administer the student counseling program to provide
    psycho-social support to students as needed
  • Meet
    with each student at least once for an individual session to help ensure
    their emotional and spiritual well-being as well as academic and
    professional success. For those who seek further counseling meet with them
    as many times as is feasible and productive within specified objectives
    agreed upon between the student and the counselor.
  • Methodically
    help each student identify the barriers to their personal and academic
    achievement in order to help them overcome them and improve their overall
    performance.
  • Periodically
    organize group sessions both for growth and proactive development
    purposes.
  • Provide
    grief and Trauma counseling for trauma victims.
  • Maintain
    vigilance over student illnesses and absences and when possible provide
    support through visits and outreach methods.
  • Support
    the success of the campus Social Change Projects (an aspect of the
    Leadership curriculum) by offering trainings on community change
    approaches and attitudes

Student Life

  • Manage
    the Mentoring program, including: Professional Mentoring (students paired
    with external professionals); Big Sisters, (older students paired with
    incoming students), and staff mentoring
  • Organize
    and manage all extracurricular clubs and student life activities,
    including but not limited to: sports clubs, prayer groups, reading clubs,
    debate clubs, etc.
  • Develop
    and run appropriate Workshops and training in professional etiquette,
    character development, reproductive health issues, health awareness, etc.
  • Manage
    the calendar of after school activities including guest speakers,
    workshops, etc.
  • Organize
    an all-student convocation every two weeks with educational programming,
    guest speakers, student presentations and other relevant matters
  • Responsible
    for working on special projects and committees as assigned or directed.

PROFESSIONAL
SKILLS

  • Bachelor
    Degree in Councelling and related fields (Masters degree preferred)
  • Knowledge
    of Counseling models and their relevant applications is essential
  • Extensive
    experience working with young women from challenging backgrounds
  • Adequate
    knowledge of Trauma and grief counseling especially for relief purposes
  • Training
    in Psychosocial methodologies and facilitation.
  • Proficiency
    in conflict resolution and management.
  • Proficiency
    in English
