POSITION TITLE: OSH Researcher for the REACH-T Program
LOCATION: Rwanda
POSITION SUMMAR

Y:

Winrock International is recruiting a consultant for the position of OSH
Lead Researcher for a US Department of Labor (USDOL)-funded Rwanda Education
Alternatives for Children in Tea-growing Areas (REACH-T). The OSH Lead
Researcher will be responsible for developing, designing, and carrying out a
research project resulting in a paper on occupational safety and health (OSH)
guidelines and working conditions and how these are monitored in Rwanda’s tea
cooperatives and companies, including research on OSH for children of legal
working age (16- 1 7).
The consultant will carry-out desk research, create survey tools and
instruments, to carry out interviews and gather data, and write the paper, with
input from project staff and Winrock home office staff.
Deliverables:
Winrock/REACH-T expects the following deliverables as a result of the
study. Deadlines for each deliverable will be reviewed and finalized between
the researcher and Winrock at the beginning of the assignment.
  • Final
    survey tools and instruments. This will include interview questions
    relevant for each key informant interview and focus group discussion
    questions.
  • Bibliography
    from desk review research
  • Raw
    data — including interview notes, recordings, and excel/SPSS data files
  • Facilitation
    on a 1 day learning workshop/debriefing session to present the draft
    findings to REACH-T staff and other stakeholders and to gather feedback
    needed to finalize the report.
  • A final
    research report in English
  • Summary
    • Background
    • Objectives
    • Survey methodology (to include survey
      locations, sampling design and size, questionnaire design and
      development, field work, data entry and processing, data analysis,
      limitations to the study)
    • Results presented in narrative and
      tables/graphs
    • OSH Guidelines (recommended guidelines,
      drawing on findings from desk research and field work)
    • Annexes (references, questionnaires, etc).
Qualification and Experience:
  • Master’s
    Degree in economics, social sciences, Law, labor studies, development
    studies, public health, or related field;
  • Three
    years’ experience conducting research in developing countries, experience
    in Rwanda preferred
  • Strong
    background in qualitative data analysis and research methodologies
  • Team
    members should have extensive knowledge national and international labor
    standards
  • Experience
    with participatory approaches and conducting focus groups and interviews
  • Experience
    in consolidating and analyzing data, writing reports, and making
    recommendations
  • Ability
    to analyze data in a clear and understandable format
