animal husbandry through their reform and using modern methods in crop and
animal production, research, agricultural extension, education and training of

reducing poverty as stress
ed by Vision 2020. The agriculture, which contributes
around 40% of the GDP, is an important sector that needs the support of
research to play a sustainable role in the development endeavor. As one of the
main pillars of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, RAB needs
enough capacity to contribute to the National Agricultural Policy and the
Ministry’s mission of transforming agriculture from the traditional subsistence
type to a demand driven and commercially oriented agriculture.
The analysis of the current animal genetic improvement situation in Rwanda
shows that there is lack of a clear animal breeding strategy. Yet, the new
Government policy on the development of livestock sector states that
“Livestock production will be increased through restocking with high
yielding breeds, genetic improvement of the indigenous herd and husbandry
practices aimed at increasing milk and meat production”.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal resources, has different positive
intentions and actions to achieve this, yet their success will depend much on
research outputs, which in turn depends on the urgent implementation of the
research breeding plan developed by RAB.
