JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
The management of EDCL (Energy
Development Corporation Limited) would like to inform the public that it is
recruiting a qualified and experienced Geo-Dynamist and Laboratory
Technician
highly motivated and passionate to work for the Project Lake
Kivu Monitoring Program (LKMP) which is a spe

cial project within EDCL,
that aims at preserving the stability and ecology of Lake Kivu, through
sustainable development of Lake Kivu resources.

I.Geo-Dynamist
a)      The
main responsibilities of the recruited candidate will be to:
  • Gather
    documentation and information, engage stakeholders, and stay up-to-date on
    all geo-dynamic aspects of Lake Kivu and its surrounding;
  • Work
    on the whole lake system (rift margins, lake, islands) on geo-dynamic,
    geo-risks and potential disaster that may affect Lake Kivu;
  • Working
    with other stakeholders in the region (OGV, GSR), set-up and implement a
    monitoring strategy of geo-dynamic parameters in and around Lake Kivu, to
    contribute to the objectives of the LKMP
  • Monitor
    and follow-up monitoring done by others on geo-dynamic parameters and
    geo-risks;
  • Identify
    and quantify hazards, vulnerabilities to conduct risk assessment on Lake
    Kivu;
  • Contribute
    to the set up a strategy for early warning system on Lake Kivu, in
    collaboration with regional and possibly international stakeholders
    already involved in this area, among which scientists;
  • Communicate
    an early warning system on Lake Kivu and surroundings with appropriate
    agencies, including a communication and emergency plan, in collaboration
    with appropriate stakeholders;
  • Participate
    in the analysis and interpretation of the general monitoring results with
    LKMP team members;
  • Regularly
    elaborate reports and contribute to LKMP scientific team reporting
    (weekly, monthly and annually);
  • Archive
    the collected and produced data, according to data policy management
    defined by the LKMP;
  • Share
    produced data with stakeholders, according to the data sharing policy
    defined by the LKMP;
  • Use
    and maintain the monitoring and early warning equipment, and any other
    equipment related to the position in good conditions;
  • Carry
    out any other task entrusted to him/her by his/her hierarchical superiors
    and in relation with the mission of Lake Kivu Monitoring Programme.
b)     Required
qualifications and experience
  • At
    least a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in geology or
    physics or mathematics or environmental science or earth science or any
    related field;
  • A
    minimum of 2 year working experience in disaster management, geo-risk,
    seismology or geodynamic;
  • Experience
    in Kivu region would be an asset.
c)     
Required skills and competencies

  • Ability
    to treat correctly and rigorously a large mass of data;

  • Excellent computer literacy (MS Office, GIS, and any specific software
    related to the scientific expertise area) ;

  • Working experience in a scientific context and/or as a researcher;

  • Ability to work in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary context;

  • Strong team player, with ability to work also on his own;

  • Good communication and organisation skills (self-starter with minimal
    supervision);

  • Good networking and interpersonal skills;

  • Dynamic and flexible, ready to work in the Rubavu district and to conduct
    field work of several days on and around the lake;

  • Written and oral fluency in French and/or English (Capability to work in
    the two languages will be an advantage);

  • Good competencies in scientific and reporting writing; published work in
    peer-review (international) scientific journal(s) will be an
    advantage.                                                                   
d)     Contract
Duration
The duration of assignment is 1 yearwith
possibility of extension.

Remuneration

A competitive salary is available for
this role, commensurate with experience and qualifications
II. Lab- Technician
a)      The
main responsibilities of the recruited candidate will be to
:
• Field sampling (water, plankton, fish
…) and measurements, including but not limited to profiles with
multi-parameters probe and hydro-acoustic survey, according to defined
protocols;
• Laboratory analyses including but not
limited to nutrient analyses using manual and automated procedures, and gas
analyses on the gas chromatograph …, according to defined protocols;
• Handling of measuring and sampling
equipment on the lake and in the laboratory;
• Follow-up, preparation, cleaning,
maintenance and testing of field and laboratory equipment (including but not
limited to cleaning of nets, change of sensors, cleaning dishes …) ;
• Small reparation of field and
laboratory equipment;
• Participation in the analysis and
interpretation of the general monitoring results with LKMP team members;
• Regular contribution to the
elaboration of reports of sampling and analyses, under supervision of LKMP
specialists;
• Archiving of the collected and
produced data, according to data policy management defined by the LKMP;
• Possible contribution to the development
of procedures;
• Carrying out any other task entrusted
to him/her by his/her hierarchical superiors and in relation with the mission
of Lake Kivu Monitoring Programme.
b)     Required
qualifications and experience

  • A degree in chemistry or biology or biochemistry or environment or any
    related field; having a Bachelor’s degree will be an asset;

  • A minimum of 2 years working experience in laboratory, preferably on water
    analyses;

  • Technical experience;

  • Experience in maintenance of equipment;

  • Experience on water analysis and/or in Kivu region would be an asset.
c)     
Required skills and competencies

• Easily understanding operation of
measurements and analysis devices;

(self-starter with minimal supervision);
• Able to work in a multicultural and
multi-disciplinary context;
• Strong team player, with ability to
work also on his own;
• Very good communication and
interpersonal skills;
• Dynamic and flexible, ready to work
in the Rubavu district and to conduct field work of several days on and around
the lake;
• Willing to work evenings and
week-ends, depending on the work requirements;
• Fluent Written and oral fluency in
French and/or English (Capability to work in the two languages will be an
advantage);
• Computer literate (MS DOS and
specific software related to field and lab equipment); Technical, electrical
and electronic competencies will be an advantage;
• Experience to work in a scientific
context will be an asset;
• With no seasickness.
 d)    
Contract Duration
The duration of the contract shall be
one (1) year renewable.
e)     
Remuneration
A competitive salary is available for
