Authority are jointly implementing a 3-year fo
rest landscape restoration
project known as Multiple-Benefit Investment Packages through forest/landscape
restoration and REDD+ in Rwanda for scaling up in Africa. The project is being
piloted in two districts of Gicumbi and Gatsibo to promote the restoration of a
mosaic of landscapes that enhance carbon stocks while ensuring the social
well-being and sustainable management of natural resources.
Tree
nurseries occupy a unique place in the tree value chain. The production of high
quality nursery stock is a crucial first step in any tree-planting
interventions and the restoration agenda in general. Poor quality seedlings
require a longer period of inputs for establishment and do not achieve good
quality mature trees. Thus the returns on investment in terms of time or
finance are higher with poor quality tree seedlings. In addition, such trees
are also more susceptible to attack by pests and diseases and more vulnerable
to events such as prolonged drought. As such, it is essential that nurseries
operate to the highest standards if the full value from trees is to be gained
from supplies of improved genetic material (seeds and cuttings).
