At least 108 National Police College (NPC) police officers in Musanze District donated blood on Thursday to help the National Blood Bank.
Voluntary blood donation practice is component of the human security operations of the Police Month initiated on July 15.
Speaking during the practice, NPC Deputy Commander Faustin Ntirushwa, Police Commissioner (CP), said donating blood is also component of safety to guarantee the safety of individuals in need of blood.
“We are in the second week of police Month, with many ongoing community activities including constructing 30 houses for the disadvantaged families; paying annual medical insurance for 3, 000 people countrywide, donating and installing solar energy in 3, 000 households, and blood donation is part of these human security activities,” CP Ntirushwa said.
He added that, in addition to police participation in multiple community social programs, they are driven by their routine experiences where blood is generally required after occurrences such as road accidents and females giving birth.
“Safety is a wide aspect; physical security and public healthcare are essential life needs. This is why police officers feel indebted to donate blood in order to save those in need,” said CP Ntirushwa.
He repeated that Rwanda National Police is dedicated to making sacrifices every day to save life and “that’s why this practice comes as an addition to our sworn duty to ensure the safety of individuals residing in Rwanda and their assets.”
Dr. Martin Bizimana, who is in charge of the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) facilities in the Northern Province, praised RNP’s initiative to save life. He also called on all Rwandans to follow the example and save life.
“This is an act of saving lives, and it shows the value our police have for the people. When you donate blood you are saving someone’s life, and we urge all Rwandans to emulate this spirit… these are some of the values that define us as Rwandans,” Dr. Bizimana observed.
