Poultry Bird and Human Health

Introduction
Poultry
birds are domesticated birds kept for food. Poultry birds supply animals with proteins
in term of meats and eggs.

The
recent notable zoonotic disease in poultry birds is called bird flu. It can be
transferred from birds to man through contact with infected birds or infected
birds by consuming the meat or the eggs of infected birds.
Bird
flu is highly infectious disease that can cause death within a very short period
of time.
Some
few cause of the outbreak of the disease where recorded in Northern part of
Nigeria.
Some
signs of birds infected with bird flu.
1.                 
Loss
of Appetite: Inability to eat
2.                 
Severe
depression: It is a situation where the bird lost head controls
3.                 
Swollen
head and face
4.                 
Discoloured
and swollen legs
5.                 
Blush
wattles and comb
6.                 
Difficulty
in breathing
7.                 
Sneezing
8.                 
Bleeding
from the nose
9.                 
Ruffled
feathers
10.            
Dehydration:
Lost of moisture or water
11.            
Diarrhea:
passing of watery stool
12.            
Cloudy
and bloody eyes
13.            
Shell
less and broken egg
14.            
Sudden
death.
Prevention of Bird Flu in Poultry Farm
1.                 
Observe
good hygiene in poultry farm.
2.                 
Report
outbreak of bird flu to the nearest veterinary clinic or office or animal
health workers.
3.                 
Government
should close down farm with bird flu and ensure that infected birds are destroyed
and buried deep with chemical.
4.                 
Do
not allow free entry and free exit.
5.                 
Stay
off from bird flu farms.
Prevention of Bird Flu Infection in Human
Being
1.                 
Observe
birds closely before buying them for human feed.
2.                 
Wash
your hand with soap and disinfectant after processing poultry meat.
3.                 
Poultry
product such as meat and egg should be properly cooked.
4.                 
Stay
off from bird flu farms.
