Factors that influence a person’s reaction to noise pollution (exposure)

Factors that influence a person’s reactions to noise
pollution according to Ducrden and Butterworths (2008) Olorunda, et al. (2007) human is an incredible
instrument sound pressure waves caused by venations set the ear drum (tymphanic
membrane) in motion. This activity involves the three bones in the middle ear,
the hammer, anvil and stirrup which physically amplify the motion received from
the prolonged exposure to noise of a certain frequency pattern may cause
temporary hearing loss or permanent loss. People who worked in sawmill or noisy
environment commonly found out that they hear noise at the end of day. Repeated
noise over a long period of term leads to permanent threshold shift. This is
especially three in an industrial environment where people are subjected to
noise of certain frequency continuous exposure to noise can create panic
episode in a person and can ever increase frustration level (Olorunda et al.,2007).

i.
Frequency: in the rule of noise
propagation the higher the frequency, the greater the annoyance.
ii.
Loudness: the louder the noise, the
greater the nuisance, it has been found that there is general dislike of noise
more related to loudness than to any other easily measured characteristics.
iii.
Unexpectedness: the effect of this
is more apparent on some than on others but all the evidence points to the
effect being of short duration.
iv.
Uncertainty of direction and
unfamiliarity: it is a natural reaction to experience a sense of unrest until
the direction and source of noise is established.
v.
Irregularity and duration:
continuous impulsive or rhythmic noise is more irritating than a smooth noise
with intermittent noise, much will depend on the frequency of the repetition
e.g. noise heard four time a day is not so annoying as one heard forty times a
day.
vi.
Necessity: if the noise generating
activity is trival or though, by the complainant to be unnecessary, his
annoyance is increased.
vii.
General state of health: poor health
or condition or emotional instability lowers the tolerance level of
acceptability.
viii.
Level of background noise: the
difference between a noise and background noise is very important the greater
the difference, the greater is the annoyance likely to be.
