Preventive care and health maintenance for the aged

Prevention
care and health maintenance for the aged consist of the following:
1.           
Early
detection of problem through:
i.              
Annual
physical examination
ii.            
Regular
dental checkups
iii.           
Regular
visual test

These
tests should be conducted at six month interval for the aged. There should be
proper monitoring of the aged (in an ideal situation, the aged should sleep for
about 7-8 hours in 24 hours).
2.        
Regular exercise: Regular exercise for fitness is important for the
aged the aged. the aged, are advised on moderate exercise as this promotes
regulation appetite, good mental and physical functioning early ambulation
especially after an illness Is also crucial for the aged.
3.     
Regular rest: Adequate mental and physical rest is usually very important for the aged
at least half in an hour after each meal at rest is usually very important for
the aged are advised to relax with feet with feet raised up to the head level,
to promote adequate venous returns.
4.     
Adequate nutrition: Adequate
nutrition prolongs life and help to reduce infection in nutrition promotion for
the aged, emphasis is laid on the following aspects.
a.    
Total calories intake:  the total
calories intake for the aged should be decreased to avoid unnecessary weight
gain and obesity
b.    
Protein intake: The protein intake remains constant 
for that of a normal adult
c.    
Alcohol ingestions
and smoking should be discouraged for the aged.
d.    
Alcohol
ingestion and smoking should be discouraged for the aged have difficulty in
chewing (dental problem) due to loss of teeth.
5.     
 Safe
environmental and personal hygiene:
Proneness to accident  was
identified as one of the major problem of the aged, especially home accident. A
safe environment, attention should be given to the following:

Adequate
home illumination to prevent falls
·        
Adequate
flooring- floor should not have slippery or wet surface because such are dangerous
and may cause falls.
·        
Stir way
should be easily used
·        
Bathing
facilities should be adequate and not slippery.
·        
Medication
at home should be labelled to avoid mistakes and ingestion of poisonous.
·        
Ensure
and maintain cleanliness: also injurious material like sharp metals and broken
bottle should be cleared away.
·        
Clotting
should be adequate to provide warmth.
6.     
 Retirement
arrangement/prevention of poverty:
Adequate retirement arrangement should
be made because such are things that make life worth living – such
arrangement  include
·        
Many
saving activities such as taking up of insurance policies etc. which will
enable one to take care of self at old age
·        
Buying of
share should be another way of saving money for the aged.
·        
Securing
comfortable accommodation before religious groups.
Strengthening
relationship with members of the families
