Prevention and control of food borne illness

The following are measures that can be taken to
maintain high standard of food hygiene. Therefore if these measures are adhered
to strictly it will help in preventing and controlling food borne illness.
                    
i.        
Effective personal hygiene on the
part of food handlers.
                  
ii.        
Provision of adequate and safe
waters for the preparation of food.
                 
iii.        
Proper storage of food.

               
iv.        
Protection of food from pest, pets,
mechanical vectors like housefly, cockroaches etc.
                 
v.        
Adequate meat inspection and
hygiene.
               
vi.        
All utensils and other equipment for
food preparation and services must be washed clean always.
              
vii.        
The premises in which food are
prepared must be kept in a sanitary condition so as to discourage the
infestation of insect and rodents.
            
viii.        
There should be no sneezing,
coughing or blowing of nose in the premises where food is been prepared or
served.
                
ix.        
Proper health education of food
handlers.
                 
x.        
Provision of adequate kitchen.
                
xi.        
Food should be transported with
clean containers in clean vehicle.
              
xii.        
Food handlers must be compelled to
undergo medical examination regularly.
             
xiii.        
The use of legislation related to
food and drugs
 (Martins, 2016).
