The Republic of the Marshall Islands consists of 29 atolls (each made up of many islets) and 5 islands. It is located in the central Pacific between 4 degrees and 14 degrees North, and 160 degrees and 173 degrees East. The atolls and islands are situated in two almost parallel, chain-like formations known as the Ratak (Sunrise) group and Ralik (Sunset) group. The total number of islands and islets in the whole Republic is approximately 1,225 spreading across a sea area of over 750,000 square miles. The total land area is about 181 square kilometres. The mean height of the land is about two metres above sea level.

This 12-24 month commitment is ideally suited to a Water and Sanitation Specialist, enthusiastic about the opportunity to make a lasting difference. The successful applicant will have experience as a water and sanitation adviser particularly in water and sewer systems functioning, operations, design of equipment and facilities, scheduling of maintenance and the development of policies.

The position will be based at the Marshall Islands Water and Sewer Company, a Division of Marshall Islands Energy Company Inc. in Majuro, with regular travel to Ebeye Island and Kwajalein Atoll.

Evaluating and recommending improvements to the design and operation of water and sanitation systems, utilities operations and organisational reform; along with training operations staff in asset management, standard operating procedures and maintenance scheduling are some of the responsibilities of this rewarding position.

Key objectives of this role are to:
• Facilitate the development and implementation of the Marshall Islands Water and Sewerage Co and Kwajalein Atoll Joint Utilities Resources 2 year action Plans
• Support approval, planning and implementation of the National Water and Sanitation Policy
• Support securing of funding for improvements projects and their implementation

• Your extensive experience in the water and sanitation field.
• Your current working knowledge of industrial or municipal size water production, treatment, storage and distribution – especially with reverse osmosis, sand filtration, rainwater catchment and pumping facilities.
• Your successful experience in monitoring and evaluation and mentoring businesses.
• Your experience in facilitating groups and formulating plans and strategies.
• Your demonstrated success in achieving results in projects in a cross-cultural capacity and experience in living and working in an isolated location or developing country within the Pacific region or other isolated, small island states.
• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Water Engineering or related field (qualifications in Business are also an advantage).

This position is part of the Pacific Technical Assistance Mechanism (PACTAM), which places highly-skilled deployees in the Pacific to assist local employers to meet their human resource needs and contribute to building capacity in the workplace. The allowances package includes AUD$128,000 p.a., plus housing allowance, relocation allowance, airfares and insurance.
