CIMMYT Cropping Systems Scientist Simulation Modeler Job Vacancy in New Delhi, India

We are seeking a dynamic, innovative and
self-motivated scientist for the position of Simulation Modeler. In additional
to strong theoretical knowledge of agricultural systems and how key process are
represented in models, the ideal candidate will also have a mix of field and
farm-level understanding along with the capacity to integrate processes,
uncertainty, and economics into a multi-scale and integrated analyses. The
successful candidate will also have a problem-solving orientation (i.e. ‘R4D’)
and value a team approach. Professional experience gained in the context of
developing countries, notably in South Asia, is desirable.
The successful applicant will join the
multi-institutional and interdisciplinary team in India that coordinates the
Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (‘CSISA’). For more information about

The position will be based in South Asia (possibly
in New Delhi or Nepal), but will interact with all CIMMYT´s experimental
stations and regional office (country and world-wide).
The main responsibilities of this position will be:
  • Identifying, adapting and deploying simulation
    tools to inform project priorities ex-ante and to extend field outcomes
    ex-post.
  • Assisting with the design, monitoring, and
    interpretation of strategic research trials on station and in farmer’s
    fields.
  • Interfacing with crop physiologists, soil
    scientists, and others with specialized knowledge to improve key models
    and model components.
  • Strengthening strategic partnerships with
    advanced research institutions that build and curate crop-soil simulation
    models in order to improve their performance, particularly under multiple
    abiotic stresses and extreme climatic events.
  • Seeking new cross-disciplinary research
    alliances that draw in expertise on remote sensing, geo-hydrology,
    economic and operational research modeling.
  • Leading efforts to assess agricultural systems
    and technology performance under scenarios of climate variability and
    climate change.
  • Where sensible, embedding simulation tools in
    decision support systems.
  • Adding value to CSISA’s existing ‘research for
    development’ field program by formalizing acquired knowledge into models,
    generating new hypotheses and process-based insights.
  • Summarizing research findings in journal
    articles and other forms of public presentation.
We are seeking candidates with the following
qualifications:
  • A PhD degree(s) in agricultural sciences
  • Significant and focused professional
    experience with the development and application of simulation models
  • Strong quantitative skills and process-level
    understanding of soil physics, soil chemistry, plant physiology, and
    agro-meteorology
  • A deep interest and commitment to inter-disciplinary
    research
  • Strong proficiency in written and spoken
    English
  • Knowledge of South Asian cropping systems
    (preferred)
We will offer an initial contract for 2 years,
which is renewable subject to continued need and funding for the position and performance
