Investor and philanthropist George Soros established the Open Society Foundations, starting in 1984, to help countries make the transition from communism. Our activities have grown to encompass the United States and more than 70 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Each foundation relies on the expertise of boards composed of eminent citizens who determine individual agendas based on local priorities.
The Open Society Media Program promotes free and independent journalism worldwide as part of a wider goal of an open society. This involves working on freedom of expression and media law reform; the education and promotion of media ethics and media worker safety; direct assistance to independent media outlets; support to minority media; and, media research and policy. The Open Society Media Program has a global mandate; the majority of its work is done through grant-giving, much of which is done through its network of local and international partners.
The Open Society Media Program seeks a program officer for media policy strategies.
Responsibilities
The program officer will be based in the London office and will have the following responsibilities:
• to maintain www.mediapolicy.org – the website publishing policy reports and research on media policy and media development issues
• cooperation with the Web Editor and the entire Media Policy team in further development of the site
• to work with a network of international partner organizations, researchers and public to promote debate on the published reports
• to participate in the development of on-line advocacy strategies over the topics raised and maintain implementation of it through different social media platforms
• to manage and coordinate with other colleagues commissioning and publishing of the Media Program’s policy reports
• to manage grants program for professional on-line and off-line debate on media/journalism related topics
• reviewing requests for implementation grants and preparing recommendations for their approval
• managing and following implementation grants
• develop and maintain the network of participating journalism debate organizations and assist in their search for adequate international expertise
• organizing network’s regular communication and meetings
• participation in planning and organization of the events to promote and support implementation of the policy recommendations outlined in the reports
• participation in various international events to present the reports’ findings and promote policy recommendations
• preparing the project’s status reports for the reporters’ meetings and the NMP Sub-Board
• cooperation with other similar media policy initiatives.
Qualifications
• university degree and understanding of media development , media policy and communications
• strong experience in editing, on-line publishing and use of social media
• excellent communication (oral and written) and inter-personal skills
• ability to work autonomously, as well as lead multinational project teams
• flexibility and ability to work in a fast paced environment with colleagues in different time zones
• financial management ability
• a second language would be desirable.
