Very
often we hear people talk about business. It seems to be one of the most common
concepts wrongly or rightly used by many people – businessmen and scholars

“It is

not my business, why should I be dragged into a matter that doesn’t concern
me?”,
“am going to the office to take care of some business”, “my business has
suffered neglect because of my academic commitments”, “business is not moving
on well because the market is dull”.
All these
are common utterances that leave one confused as to what actually business is.
Thus from the above expose, it may be fathomed that just anything at all is
business to the layman depending on the context of usage or the mind deposition
of the person making such pronouncement and the time and circumstances
surrounding it.

In
the midst of this seeming confusion therefore, business seems to have different
category of people. Just like beauty lies in the beholder, business in our
contemporary times somehow lies in the eyes of the evaluator or person
proffering the concept.

It
is akin to the story of the three blind men who went to the circus show to see
an elephant. One of the blind men was taken close to the big animal and he
touched the tail of the elephant and concluded that the elephant is an animal
with a huge soft tail. The second blind man touched the middle section of the
animal, rubbed his hand on its rough wrinkled and warty belly and concluded
that the elephant was a huge animal with tough and round belly. The third blind
man got hold of the elephant truck, fumbled with the petruding tusk and
concluded that the elephant is an animal with a long and tubby nose.

When
the three blind men got home, a serious argument arose among them. Each of them
telling the other what he thought the elephant was. To those who learned the
arguments and who are not blind, they saw clearly that each of them was wrong
in their description of the animal, yet each was right by some remote and
incomplete way: why? Because the animal does have all the characteristics the
blind men described. The only problem was that the elephant is far bigger and
far more encompassing than what they could rationalize in their blind state

Very
often some people (the uninformed) think that buying and selling item is
business. Even the 419 practitioner regard his illicit acts as business and
armed robbers even pray to God to prosper their business. Thus for such people,
anything that they can engage in that will yield money is business. Little
thought is given to social, moral, economical and legal implications arising
from what they do
