Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) Rights Media Education Officer Job Vacancy in Tanzania

Note: 2 positions available in Dar Es Salaam,
Tanzania, 2 positions available in Accra, Ghana.
1)Curriculum on Human Rights and Democracy
Reporting
: The officer, in partnership with local journalists and local
university staff, will research and write curriculum for a workshop series on
human rights and democracy reporting in Tanzania, including best practices and
lessons learned. The curriculum will be provided to all local training
institutions and media houses.
2)Workshops: The
officer will work with the faculty of a local university to develop and deliver
curriculum for a Rights Media production and reporting course.
3)Human Rights and Democracy Media Analysis: the officer will research the local media’s coverage of various human
rights issues. They will write a report on their findings, providing
recommendations to the university and the broader human rights community on how
local human rights issues are or are not covered in the media. This will then
be used in future course development.
4)Radio Station Support: the officer will support a local university with the establishment of a
campus radio station. The officer will help with numerous tasks necessary,
including the development of programs, training on station equipment, and the
incorporation of Rights Media.
5)Campus Media Support: the officer will contribute to the university student radio stations
and newspapers, developing a series of Rights Media programs, as well as
general support in training and production of the university media.
6)Establishing of jhr Campus Chapter: the officer will consult local university students to establish a
campus jhr chapter. In keeping with jhr’s mandate, the officer will help to
facilitate introductory events to engage the student population and establish
the campus chapter. Activities include: membership drive, executive member
elections, and constitutional agreement.
7)jhr Campus Chapter Support: the officer will support the local university student campus chapter to
develop and host Rights Media events, community engagement activities, and new
member recruitment.
8)Canadian Engagement: The officer is required to post one journal entry and one article on
jhr’s Abroad Website at least every two weeks
Qualifications:
  • A postsecondary degree or diploma in
    journalism
  • Experience working in print or radio
    production
  • Experience or demonstrable interest in
    teaching and training (educational and media houses who requested)
  • Knowledge of human rights
  • Excellent personal skills
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Knowledge of the country of placement
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Out of school;
  • Must not have previously participated in a
    government-funded internship program;
  • Between the ages of 19 and 30;
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
