Tanzania Education Corporation (TEC) provides
support for Tumaini Junior School in Karatu, Tanzania. Tumaini Junior School is
a private but non-profit English Medium School whose mission is to educate the
future leaders of Tanzania. Currently, only 30% of students in Karatu are
passing their national exams. Due to this and other preventing factors, only
11% of Tanzanian youth continue their education past primary school. Tumaini is
working with TEC to change this and is proud to report that 100% of its
students have passed their national exams to date. It is ranked number 1 out of
90 primary schools in Karatu, and 40th of 15,656 primary schools in Tanzania-

cellence. As a volunteer at Tumaini, you will have the opportunity
to work alongside a dedicated Tanzanian and American staff to make a positive
impact on the students of Tumaini and the overall community of Karatu.
About the Position:
We are seeking a highly motivated and independent
individual to volunteer in Tumaini’s new library and computer lab. This
individual will work closely with the Tumaini librarian and staff to implement
new systems related to both of these spaces. Specific job responsibilities
include:

- Introduce students and staff to the new
categorization of books and resources according to subject and reading
level. - Assist in library organization by helping to
manage circulation desk - Help to monitor computer lab and assist with
typing lessons - Train students and staff on proper library
usage through weekly workshops - Encourage students to read and teachers to use
new resources as supplements in lessons
TEC provides on the ground orientation and staff
support. We arrange for your transport to and from Kilimanjaro Airport and
assist you with locating housing that meets your requirements (range from $10-$20
usd/night). Karatu is an ideal location for access to some of Tanzania’s most
coveted destinations. Take a safari in the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater just
30 minutes away. Travel just beyond to the vast plains of the Serengeti. Go a
bit farther to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro or visit the white beaches of Zanzibar!
