Internship description

Duties/responsibilities of intern:

  • Assessing Client Needs (OVC
    Household)
    • Interviewing clients and performing assessments
      under the supervision of a staff social worker to determine client needs,
      including poverty level, social, emotional, health and educational needs;
    • Developing and maintaining competency in
      assessing and meeting the needs of every OVC, including OVCs who are
      tortured or violated in any way.
    • Providing crisis mediation to clients as needed
      under the supervision of a staff social worker.
  • Developing and Implementing Service Plans
    • Developing social service plans under the
      supervision of a staff social worker for example developing an income
      generating initiative driven by clients’ expressed interests and goals.
    • Becoming and remaining familiar with relevant
      service providers, including community-based providers of health care
      services, job training, counselling and education.
    • Conducting home visits to assess the quality of
      service providers and their suitability for clients; and creating and
      maintaining a service provider database for staff.
    • Counselling OVCs and families on available
      services and benefits and on overcoming potential barriers to accessing
      those services and benefits;
    • Making referrals, and assisting with logistics
      and enrolment to help clients and their families access needed services
      and benefits;
    • Evaluating client progress towards service plan
      goals, and counselling clients to help ensure that goals are met.
  • Communication, Presentation and
    Documentation
    • Building and maintaining strong relationships of
      trust with OVCs and their families;
    • Thoroughly documenting all work and all
      information gathered;
    • Performing other tasks and duties consistent
      with the experience and expertise of an intern social worker, as directed
      by the supervising social worker or executive director.

Social work interns must perform all duties
under the supervision of a staff social worker and in accordance with
applicable law, ethical rules, and performance standards.

Educational/Skill Requirements:

KACOP is seeking an undergraduate or graduate
student from any majoror volunteer with the following skills.

  • Previous experience in social work is highly
    desirable
  • Experience working with people who are
    traditionally socially-excluded groups such as, people with HIV/AIDS,
    women, and children.
  • Strong inter-personal skills and cross-cultural
    sensitivity
  • Good organization skills
  • Knowledge in software, MS Word, Excel, power
    point
  • Ability to adapt to a diverse type of tasks
  • Ability to work independently
  • Interest in volunteering
  • A desire for a career in international
    development

Language proficiency: good English required

Additional Requirements:

  • volunteer must bring own computer
  • Volunteer must commit to raising $1200 USD. We
    suggest fundraising to offset personal costs. Don’t worry; we will guide
    you when the time comes.

Participation fee of $1200 USD borne entirely
by the volunteer/intern and no repayment at the end of the project, the fee
covers only the following; program funding, volunteer accommodation,
pre-departure administration work, one day trip around Kampala, on arrival
orientation, local mobile sim card you use to call, 3 meals a day for a week
and airport pick up.
