Context
The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
Background to programme
Following a series of earthquakes in 2009 and 2010 which affected approximately 24,000 households, over 10,000 households remain in critical need of support in shelter and sanitation. Most of these households are located in Karonga district. The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) and British Red Cross Society (BRCS) are establishing a DFID funded programme aimed at supporting affected households in Karonga in recovering from these disaster. The focus of the programme’s activities includes shelter as well as access to safe water and improved health & sanitation. The programme is expected to last until June 2013.
Job purpose
For the first 6 months of the project the Programme Advisor (PA) will support the project to ensure the appropriate systems and procedures are in place and to ensure quality in the programme set up. The role requires a strong background in project management and a technical knowledge of shelter and watsan. The PA will work closely with the MRCS Programme Manager and Officer, with a dual reporting line to the MRCS Director of Programmes and the BRCS Recovery Programme Manager. This position will be based in Lilongwe with frequent field visits and will be reviewed by MRCS and BRCS after 4 months to determine if an extension is necessary.
Location: Lilongwe, Malawi (with frequent travel to field sites)
Duration: 6 months (with possibility of extension)
Salary: From £27,682 per annum + excellent benefits
