Location: South Delta, Tsawwassen, British Columbia
The Earthwise Society is a not-for-profit, charitable organization with a mandate to promote sustainability through environmental education and stewardship. The one-acre Earthwise Garden is a demonstration garden that helps educate people about alternatives to pesticide use. This year, in response to the municipal ban on the cosmetic use of pesticides, the Society will focus on extending community participation at the Earthwise Garden through educational programs and community events. Reporting to the Garden Co-ordinator, the Garden Education Assistant will help to maintain the demonstration garden and educate the public about pesticide free gardening.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
– Under the direction of the Garden Co-ordinator, help to maintain the Earthwise Garden as a destination learning resource for ecological gardeners
– Maintain informational displays, greet garden visitors and provide information on pesticide free gardening
– Help to train garden volunteers working with seniors in gardening programs
– As part of a team, assist in the planning and delivery of special events at the garden
– Assist with workshops and educational programs on pesticide free gardening
– Help with plant propagation programs
– Assist with planting projects and new installations at the Earthwise Garden
– Assist with the design and set up of garden/farm displays
QUALIFICATIONS
– Knowledge and understanding of sustainable horticulture practices
– Experience with gardening and composting
– Post-secondary studies related to horticulture
– Good interpersonal and communication skills
– Comfortable with outdoor physical work
– Any of the following skills are also an asset: carpentry, flower arranging, graphic design
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
35 hours per week, $10.50/hr
Must be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
Must be registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year
Must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
