Who We Are:
TEA was founded in 1988. Our mandate is to promote a greener Toronto. We work with concerned individuals and grassroots organizations, professionals and workers, encouraging the participation of local people on local issues. TEA envisions Toronto as a green, healthy and equitable city with economic activity that sustains our environment.
TEA is recognized locally and nationally for our municipal work on smog, waste reduction, pesticides, transit, Greenbelt protection, energy efficiency and green power — issues we believe are critical to the health and well-being of Toronto residents. Our collaborations with the community (eg. community groups, local labour groups, small businesses, anti-poverty groups) are cherished and key to our past and future successes.
The Position:
We are hiring a summer student to help with community outreach, including tabling at events, speaking at schools and helping to coordinate volunteers. Candidates must be prepared to work outside of the office and in the community, talking with residents about building a greener Toronto.
Duties and Responsibilites:
This individual will:
• Attend events on behalf of TEA;
• Help respond to requests for TEA to attend events;
• Organize interested volunteers to attend events;
• Put together the necessary materials (pamphlets, sign-up sheets, facts on the environment, etc) for community outreach;
• Seek out events and organizations that TEA can connect with within Scarborough South West;
• Help recruit volunteers and keep them engaged with the organization;
• Train volunteers on TEA and TEA issues;
• Liaise with community members and organizations on behalf of TEA;
• Be willing to work some evenings and weekends; and
• Organize events and public talks in Scarborough South West to engage more people on environmental issues.
The successful candidate will report directly to TEA’s Community Outreach Coordinator, but will actively work with all TEA staff informing them of events and helping them outreach in various communities in Scarborough South West.
Qualifications:
• Able to begin work Tuesday June 7th and complete 12 weeks of work by Saturday August 27th
• Available June 3rd or 6th for an interview
• Able to work some evenings and weekends, in place of working during the day (this is needed to attend community events and meetings)
• Excellent communication skills and organizational skills
• Enthusiastic and outgoing
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
• A passion for environmental and social justice issues
• Some experience coordinating volunteers and events an asset
• Some understanding of the City of Toronto’s political structure
• Not required, but candidates who can speak Bengali, Tamil, or Tagalog will be strongly considered

After the first few weeks of becoming familiar with the organization, this will be a fairly independent position. The candidate will outline objectives with the Community Outreach Coordinator and will check-in daily. This is an excellent opportunity to network with other environmental non profit organizations, community groups, neighbourhood associations, and members of the Toronto community. This is an opportunity to practice communication skills, organization skills, event organizing skills, managerial skills, and presentation skills. The candidate will also learn about many local environmental issues and events happening throughout the GTA, as well as have the opportunity to interact with Torontonians on those issues.
This is a position funded by Canada Summer Jobs and requires that the candidate be:
(a) between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
(b) registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year;
(c) a student in a post-secondary program;
(d) a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
(e) legally entitled to work.
