Sierra Youth Coalition (SYC) is a Canada-wide, diverse non-profit organization, run by youth for youth, and serves as the youth arm of the Sierra Club of Canada. Through grassroots action, Sierra Youth Coalition aims to address environmental and social sustainability, by focusing on environmental integrity, social equity and economic prosperity. Our organisation reflects the belief that all things are interconnected.
Sierra Youth Coalition formed in 1996 with a vision of involving Canadian youth in pressing environmental issues. Since then, it has grown into a national youth environmental coalition with members and volunteers across all regions of Canada, and local groups operating out of schools, universities, and communities across the country.
Project description
The Youth Action Gatherings (YAG) are weeklong skills and leadership building camps which aim to increase understanding of environmental and social justice issues. YAGs also offer trainings on the skills necessary to take concrete actions on these issues. The project brings together youth from diverse backgrounds to a safe space that promotes the creation of a solid network of empowered youth. Youth leave the program infused with the ability to develop grassroots actions that affect and include the greater community.
This position will largely focus around developing, planning and coordinating the Ottawa gathering in 2011 for rural and urban youth.
Job Description
• Gathering outreach and registration;
• Planning gathering content (workshops and schedule);
• Organizing logistics (food, travel, insurance, etc.);
• Managing all activities throughout the 5 days camp;
• Fundraising for the event to meet its financial requirements;
• Coordinating summer volunteers to assist with the gathering (if needed); and
• Regularly checking in with the YAG National coordinator to troubleshoot.

• Excellent people skills and enthusiasm
• Skills and experience working with youth
• Bilingualism
• Strong organizational skills
• Experience with project management
• Fundraising experience
• Posses skills and experience working with diverse and marginalized communities
• Preferred past involvement with the Sierra Youth Coalition
• Understanding of the youth environmental and sustainability movement
