STATISTICIANS

To help us achieve this vision, we are looking for a strategic and energetic team player to provide expert advice and consultation to senior management on advanced statistical, research design and measurement methods and techniques.
In addition, the position is responsible for working with Actuarial Services and Finance in the development of predictive models and in the evaluation of the results.

Responsibilities include:
• Provide expert advice, recommendations and information from a statistical perspective to senior and operational management, Branch and other staff, and externals on advanced statistical, research design and measurement methods and techniques.
• Identify current and emerging issues through the use of advanced statistical techniques and research methods.
• Work with Actuarial Services and Finance to build predictive models using SAS and other statistical and data mining systems and in evaluating the business implications of the results.
• Establish analytical data sets that combine various data sources.
• Interpret and synthesize data from diverse sources using advanced mathematical and statistical theories and applications. Condense, consolidate and summarize findings and recommendations for reporting and presentation purposes using various formats (e.g. systematic review and meta-analysis techniques as required).
• Routinely survey published scientific literature on issues related to data mining, predictive modeling, measurement and research design. Liaise with the insurance, finance and academic community and remain part of its information network in order to keep abreast of the most recent developments on issues relevant to the WSIB.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with various operational areas of the WSIB to identify needs, discuss and resolve issues, and exchange information of mutual concern.
• Lead and/or participate in data mining and predictive modeling projects.
• Act as a point of contact in dealing with a range of issues/complaints and requests for information related to statistics and data from internal and external clients including researching the issue, determining possible solutions, preparing written comprehensive summary reports and presenting details with recommendations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
Position Requirements:
1. Demonstrated experience providing expert consultation and analysis on advanced research work and program evaluation, building and implementing predictive models and providing recommendations. This is normally acquired through a Masters Degree in the statistics, mathematics or other quantitative discipline and 3 -5 years of related experience.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of project management to participate and/or lead projects varying in scope and complexity ensuring projects are carried out according to the scheduled workplan.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills to liaise and build rapport with senior management and internal/external stakeholders on a wide variety of issues which may be highly sensitive or controversial in nature.
4. Strong oral communication skills to present/discuss/recommend research methodologies and approaches with all levels of management and staff.
5. Strong written communication skills to write and publish statistical and research reports both within the Board as well as through accredited academic/scientific journals.
6. Knowledge of the external political, economic and social climate in Ontario and beyond to identify trends, potential issues and their impact on the mandate of the Office.
7. Knowledge of computer systems and software applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel. PowerPoint, Access), Cognos, SAS and other statistical tools. Demonstrated ability to conduct advanced SAS programming for data management and predictive modeling.
8. Knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and regulations.
9. Knowledge of WSIB programs and services to have an understanding of the Board’s business.
