JOB DESCRIPTION
Alternatives Journal is Canada’s only national magazine devoted to environmental issues, analysis, policy and ideas, and we want you to help shape it.
While our editor-in-chief is on sabbatical, we require an interim Editorial Manager to be in charge of our multimedia content. You will bring environmental knowledge, editorial passion, web savvy and a keen sense of organization, deadlines, and online promotion: basically everything that independent publishing involves today. You’ll work within a small-office environment with a dedicated, diverse, fun-loving, hard-working team to create, promote and distribute Alternatives Journal both in print and online.
The successful candidate will:
• Manage and prepare manuscripts for publication
• Research, write, fact check, copy edit and proofread
• Liaise with authors
• Manage editorial interns and volunteers who assist with fact checking, copy editing and proofreading
• Complete administrative duties, including managing production schedules and editorial board meetings
• Oversee content for alternativesjournal.ca and greenbookreviews.ca
• Supervise expansion of thegreenstudent.ca
• Stay apprised of current environmental trends in order to seek out relevant stories and help shape the content of each issue
• Assist with fundraising and help raise awareness about the magazine
• Other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
• 5 to 8 years’ experience in editing and/or publishing
• Broad familiarity with current political, economic, social and ecological aspects of Canadian environmental ideas and action (preference will be given to candidates with post-secondary degree or courses in environmental studies or related fields)
• Superb written and oral communication skills (preference will be given to candidates with post-secondary degree or courses in English language or related studies)
• Meticulous and knowledgeable about grammar and punctuation
• An understanding of the art of magazine writing
• Tenacity and advanced research capabilities
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to work both independently and with a team
• Professional demeanour in all communications
• Ability to work within tight timelines
• Ability to juggle many tasks while maintaining a sense of humour
• Familiarity with the non-profit sector
