The Otesha Project is a national youth-led charitable organization created in 2002. We use theatre to mobilize and equip Canadians to create local and global change through individual and collective choices. Our vision is to see sustainable consumption and lifestyle choices enter the mainstream of Canadian culture. To date, we have reached more than 150,000 Canadians directly with our theatre presentations and workshops that inspire youth to re-evaluate their daily consumer choices to reflect the kind of world they want to live in.
The Otesha Project is seeking a part-time, competent, and enthusiastic Communications Coordinator. The successful candidate will work as a member of a 4 person staff team and will be specifically responsible for implementing the organization’s external communications, promotion, marketing and community outreach. The successful candidate will be a team-builder who leads by example with a demonstrated ability to accomplish near and long-term goals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
This position is a rare opportunity to become a part of a small team of dedicated and passionate individuals working to create positive societal change through youth education. Because of the organization’s small size and flexible organizational structure, the candidate will have the opportunity to engage in all of Otesha’s programs, and use his or her skills to continually better the organization and increase its impact.
The Otesha Project operates with an organizational structure in which employees evaluate one another. Accordingly, candidates must be comfortable delivering and receiving honest and constructive feedback to and from other staff members.
Specific areas of responsibility include:
1) External Communications:
• Answers all incoming requests for information
• Plans and maintains the organization’s communications strategy including, but not limited to, web-based communications and social media platforms
• Contact management–Plans, implements and maintains the organization’s Salesforce contact management system for 2012. Also ensure that all staff are trained in the use of the organization’s contact management system
• Writes, co-ordinates and distributes external communications materials, including monthly electronic newsletters (Otesha E-Journal and Kickstand) and print materials
• Manages content on the Otesha website
• Solicits and co-ordinates media coverage of Otesha programs and events
2) Promotion and Marketing:
• Plans and implements Otesha’s promotion and marketing strategies, including recruitment campaigns that promote the organization’s programming
• Plans and implements promotion of the Otesha Book, monitors inventory and co-ordinates distribution
3) Community Outreach
• Solicits presentation opportunities at community activities and events
• Represents the organization at community activities and events
• Assists with fundraising events
• Delivers Otesha workshops in Ottawa and the surrounding area as needed
IDEAL ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS
• Communications degree or experience
• Effective media relations skills
• Experience in marketing, promotion or outreach
• Experience in public speaking, theatre and/or group facilitation
• Knowledge of sustainability and social justice issues
• Experience with Salesforce, Vertical Response or other database software
• Experience with website management
• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment
• Self-motivated, demonstrated ability to take initiative
• Strong attention to detail and high productivity
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Position: 3-4 days per week (.666 position)
Length of term: 12 month contract, with a 6 month contract review
Salary: Grassroots charitable sector rate, commensurate with experience
