Each growing season at Chick-a-biddy we seek out two apprentices. The interns join us at the beginning of May and stay on until the end of October. It is a full immersion farm experience. Everyone takes part in all areas of the farm business. It is a live-in position, 5 1/2 days per week, room and board and a weekly stipend provided.
There is education on all aspects of running a CSA garden, from seeding in the greenhouse to transplanting and harvesting and all points in between. Delivering to stores, restaurants and farmer’s markets is another part of the job. Management and care of the chicken and egg production as well as tending to small scale rare breed sheep, pigs, cattle and ducks.
From the years we have been having apprentices at the farm, there have been several who have gone on and started their own farming enterprises. I feel very fortunate to have made so many good connections with the people who have come through Chick-a-biddy Acres. It is an exchange of education for labour, in a very hands on way. It requires a person who is very hard working, responsible, well-organized and has a good sense of humour.
Anyone interested in spending May-Oct in an idyllic setting and learning the ropes, please contact us by the middle of February.
