The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization
that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods
by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer
behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United
States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose
livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they
grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.
Position Summary:
The Manager, Canada will be responsible for the operational management
of the RA-Cert Canada region and
staff including administrative
personnel and teams that provide Rainforest Alliance auditing and
certification services. S/he is responsible for managing and
implementing RA-Cert strategic and business plans in the region.
Responsibilities:
Regional Management & Planning
• In coordination with the RA-Cert executive management team, develop
and implement strategic and business plans for the region, including
regular progress reporting;
• Manage marketing and sales of Rainforest Alliance certification and
verification services to commercial, governmental and community-based
enterprises, including sales and business targets for the region;
• Establish and ensure regional implementation of customer service
protocols for current and interested clients;
• Oversee management of the regional teams responsible for
implementing auditing services and other regional operations;
• Manage RA-Cert policies and procedures implementation by staff and
auditors to ensure integrity, credibility and conformance with
certification systems;
• Coordinate with the Quality Assurance team for implementation of
quality audits, monitoring, training, and requisite follow up
activities; and
• Coordinate with the Quality Assurance team and Service Leads to
resolve disputes (complaints and appeals).
Regional Partnerships
• Serve as liaison with regional stakeholder and certification scheme
groups, e.g., the FSC Canada Office;
• Oversee network of regional consultants, including auditors, to
ensure capacity of service delivery as well as necessary
communications, training, and relationship management; and
• Collaborate with executive management team to identify and develop
partnerships, including MOU representatives and in-country government,
industry and NGO partners.
Finance & Operations
• Develop and manage the annual budget for the Canada region; and
• In coordinator with HQ, manage the finances of the RA-Cert Canada
region, including review of monthly financial reports (e.g., Profit &
Loss statements, projections).
Supervisory Responsibilities:
• This position may oversee staff
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the
organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include
interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and
directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining
employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources related field, Economic
Development, Business or related field; advanced degree preferred;
• 7-10 years of work experience in one or more of the following
fields: natural resources management or production/manufacturing,
economic development, finance and operations, quality assurance,
auditing, ISO or other applicable areas;
• Lead auditor trained in FSC, Agriculture, ISO or other certification
protocol highly desirable;
• Project management (e.g. planning, management, evaluation),
experience in marketing and sales and strong analytical skills
required; Business management skills a plus;
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English language required;
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in French highly desirable;
• Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills;
• Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact culturally,
linguistically, and diplomatically with diverse internal and external
individuals;
• Strong computer skills (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets and
presentations);
• Detail-oriented individual with strong organizational management and
development skills to manage multiple priorities in a time sensitive
manner;
• Knowledge of and commitment to environmental and socio-economic
issues and sustainability practices; and
• Ability and willingness to travel a minimum of 40% per year,
nationally and internationally.
