Who We Are
Foxglove Farm is a 120-acre organic farm and education center located
on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. The farm is based on one of
the oldest homesteads on the island, surrounded by thousands of acres
of protected forest, pastures and fields, bordering the pristine
Maxwell Lake.
The farm produces berries, asparagus, melons, greens, roots, a wide
range of annual Mediterranean vegetables, as well as diverse orchard
fruits. We also produce grains and pulses, hay, and manage a small
flock of pastured laying hens.
Foxglove Farm is home to the Centre for Arts, Ecology & Agriculture.
The Centre was established to demonstrate and interpret the vital
connections between farming, land stewardship, food, the arts, and
community well being. Public programs, classes, and events are offered
throughout the summer and fall.
Foxglove Farm also offers accommodations and retreats in beautifully
restored cottages and in the original log home on one of the island’s
finest heritage working farm properties.
Position Description
Although we make an effort to provide some more formal instructional
time, this is primarily a “hands on” experiential opportunity.
Apprentices work as a team handling most aspects of farm operations
including planting, cultivating, irrigation, harvest, and marketing.
Schedule
Position begins May 1 and ends October 31.
Time commitment is approximately 50 hours/week, Monday through Friday,
with one Saturday per month required to participate in the farmers
market.
The midseason workday schedule starts at 7:00 am with an hour for
lunch and the workday completed by 5 or 6pm. The exception is on
harvest days or if we are all working to complete a special project or
task.
Compensation/Term/Schedule
We provide private housing, utilities, high speed internet, farm
produce for personal use, some basic food staples. and a stipend of
$500 per month.
