PowerShift is the the largest climate justice gathering of its kind in Canada.
With two successful national gatherings and two successful regional gatherings
under our belts, PowerShift Alberta sets the stage for the growth and
mobilization of a powerful youth climate movement in Alberta and the prairies.
As part of a global movement, PowerShift is a 3-4 day event that will take
place in March 2016 on Treaty 6 territory in Edmonton, AB. It will bring together
hundreds of youth for issues and action-based workshops, mobilization on core
issues, and movement building. We are currently looking for a coordinator to
work with the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, the PowerShift organizing
committee, and working groups to make this happen.
SUMMARY
DESCRIPTION:
The Organizer will work with the National Director of the CYCC to build a local
organizing team, working groups, and volunteers to ensure a successful
PowerShift gathering. They will work to coordinate meetings, activities and
more in a dynamic, multi-stakeholder organizing initiative that includes
individuals and organizations. They will also work with the CYCC National
Director to ensure that funding is secured and allocated properly, as well as
working to develop volunteer recruitment and management plans. The exact roles
and responsibilities will be dynamic and dependent on the development of the
PowerShift Alberta organizing structure.
Responsibilities
include:
• Organizing and
facilitating an Alberta PowerShift Organizing Team, including regular
conference calls and meetings.
• Overseeing and supporting the creation of PowerShift working groups.
• Representing PowerShift/the CYCC in external meetings.
• Facilitating the development and implementation of PowerShift activities at
the local and regional levels.
• Recruit volunteers and work with volunteer/core team leaders to oversee and
develop volunteer strategies.
• Fundraising and coordination with the Budget/Fundraising team to ensure that
fundraising goals are met, and that there is organizational financial
accountability.
• Oversee development of PowerShift materials (physical and web-based.)
• Develop and implement a communications strategy that includes a website,
social media, and email.
• Liaise with the
media during Powershift and in the lead-up as necessary.
• Regular work planning including submission of regular reports to the
Organizing Team.
• Other responsibilities as required.
You possess:
• Excellent
organizational leadership skills, including strategic planning, facilitation
and time management skills.
• Proven skills in
coalition building and experience managing multiple stakeholders. Excellent
interpersonal skills and networking ability.
• Proven skills in recruiting, engaging and managing volunteers.
• Experience working with youth between the ages of 15-30, and
inter-generational allyship.
• Strong English communication skills, both verbal and written. (French and
other language skills are a strong asset.)
• Experience in public speaking.
• Fundraising skills including writing grants and funding proposals.
• Ability to work on a team as well as independently.
• Extremely well-organized and able to meet deadlines and juggle multiple
projects at one time in a fast-paced work environment.
• Word processing and computer skills. Graphic design and website design skills
are an asset.
• Good knowledge of web-based social networks and new media.
• A demonstrated commitment to climate justice.
• The ability to work flexible work hours, especially immediately before and
during the event.
